I'm performing the final test of the K2 equipment prior to full installation. I've got Clearwater lights installed on my bike, so I plan on using one of the additional/available relay wires from the Clearwater Can-Opener.
So, I've got the K2 connected to the + and - terminals of the battery, and I've got the GPS receiver and two cameras plugged into the main unit. In this configuration, when I start the bike, the unit does not start up, however I can confirm that it is getting power, because depressign the power button will startup the K2. But, as you can see, the unit does not power on by itslef, so it's almost worthless to me.
When I take the relay wire from the Can Opener, and attach it to the Yellow wire on the K2 controller, I would expect that, if the unit has power, that it would then turn on, and begin recording. But, that's not what happens.
When I provide the power to the Yellow wire from the K2 controller, the unit does not start, and seems to be no different from any vantage point.
I've tested the Can Opener, and with the bike off, the relay wire produces zero volts. The same thing happens when I turn on the bike. But, when I start the engine, the relay wire lead from the Can Opener immediately offers up a 12 V signal, which should be more than enough to trigger the K2, yet it does not.
Any thoughts?
thanks
What happens if you connect the yellow directly to the battery? You may have to move it to a different switches power source. You need it to power up on both accy and ignition.
Hey Kevin, I've confirmed that the input lead that I'm providing to the K2 is providing 12 V, yet the unit still fails to power up, unless and until I press the power button.
So, I can say confidently that the issue is not about the precise moment that the K2 comes on, but that it does not come on at all, even with a +12V signal applied to the inbound trigger lead of the K2.
It seems to me that the ability to test the h/w in a definitive manner, and having documentation that describes how to test, and what results are expected, is lacking, and that's the problem. We're all a bit gunshy, and don't want to install all of the h/w until we can confirm that it is working, and there are too many examples of people trying to test their units, who either receive unexpected, or inconsistent results from their tests. IMHO, that is the root of most of these issues.
Said another way, why doesn't the FAQ document address each of the points that have been brought up in this forum?
I trust it’s brand new? I’d suggest reaching out to Rock if you sure your connections are good. He’s pretty good about standing behind the hardwear. He just replace a couple of my components under warranty.
I have a similar situation.
Device is connected to battery (red to positive, black to neagtive & Yellow to auxillery outlet on BMW). Confirmed 12 volts to converter and 5 volts from converter to (at connector) DVR. No indication of life at DVR. Power connection to DVR is solid. Connection to GPS is sketchy (not sure this is a solid connection due to poor threading on the connector).
Bad DVR or someting else I should try?
Hello Steve,
It seems that you and I have an identical or similar situation, and we're asking reasonable questions about how it all should work.
I've submitted a few questions to Innovv, hoping that they'll get back to me with some good answers.
I recently installed a K2 on my HD, first with the PowerHub 2 and then just the converter. If you put 12 volts on both the power and trigger connections and the DVR doesn't power up, then I would send an e-mail to Felicia at INNOVV (innovv@innovv.com) and ask for a replacement DVR. I used that method to request a replacement converter recently, and they were very responsive. The forum probably less so.
On a side note, I'm not familiar with the electrics on a BMW. On my HD with the PowerHub installed, I started experiencing an intermittent drop of my rear stereo amplifier after the install and the K2/PowerHub was the only change. After I deinstalled the PowerHub and wired the K2 converter directly, the amplifier issued went away and the K2 has been operating pretty much flawlessly so far (although it does get quite warm!). I therefore deduced that the PowerHub doesn't play nice with my Harley CANBUS in some way Your mileage may vary. Good luck!
If you switch on the motorbike's contact and switch on the Innovv manually. Then switch off the motorbike contact. Will the Innovv switch off? If yes, then the control signal is present.
My experience is that starting up the Innovv needs some time, a few seconds.
Hans, it seems that the presence or absence of my +12V power source seems to be completely irrelevant. Regardless of whether I have that source applied, the K2 unit responds exactly the same. That is to say that it never turns on automatically, and that once powered on, the presence or lack of presence of the input trigger does not cause it to turn on, or off.
Sorry for delayed reply.
It is simple to confirm if the converter is working properly.
Connect the wires from the converter to motorcycle battery,
Red to the positive terminal,
Black to the negative terminal.
Turn on motorcycle, you can see the camera system does not work.
After that,
Connect yellow wire to the positive terminal, and wait for 10 seconds, you can see the camera system to power on.
Remove yellow wire from the positive terminal, after 10 seconds, you can see the camera system shut off.
Check and confirm if the converter work as this way,
If yes, the converter works properly, check the wire connection.
If not, the converter should have problem, check for replacement.
Hello Rock,
I worked with Ryan to perform some troubleshooting, and I can now confirm that the entire camera system is working properly. The problem was that I was simply not waiting long enough for the system to initialize.
After applying power to the yellow lead, the system did begin to initialize, but the initialization period can easily be 10 seconds or more, and it seems that i simply didn't wait long enough to confirm that the unit had received a trigger, and was starting up.
So, this problem is solved, no hardware was replaced.
Exactly what I said, wait a few seconds ;-)
It is also in the installation manual.
The K2 is like a small PC and needs to boot up its operating system and check all its components (Cameras, G-Sensor, GPS, SD-Card). That takes some time.
