Hi, I haven't been here for a while but I came back and found that there have been multiple updates. I just updated to Frostie's quality-modified V0.57, with the hope of being able to use USB transfer. As usual with the K2, I'm still scratching my head over a few things...
1) I can make changes to many of the settings, but some just won't save. For example, I turned off the speed display, changed to 60Hz and turned off the G2 sensor, and set the file recording time to 5 minutes. But when I power off and power back on, only some of those settings are saved. 60Hz and speed display were saved, but the G2 sensor gets re-set to LOW and the recording time gets set back to 1 minute. Is there any way to get these settings to "stick"?
2) USB transfer -- is this possible and practical? I'm using 0.57, with a 256GB SDXC card. I go on several-thousand-mile trips and would love to be able to copy off certain files without having to remove the side cover and pop out the SD card. I thought I could leave a USB cable attached and plug my phone in to browse the K2's card, but that didn't work. The phone powered the K2 on, but that's all it did, and Android didn't give me the option to use the attached USB device for file transfer. So is there a way to plug in an Android, have it see the K2 as a mass storage device, power up the K2 and copy files from it?
3) I saw that there are now three directories in the app, so some things have changed. But I didn't see any way to mark a specific file on the K2 to avoid being deleted. Is that possible? Sometimes on the road I'll pass something specific and want to save that footage, but the wifi transfer is simply unusable, so if I could mark certain wanted files, and then delete everything else, it'd make it very easy to find and transfer only the wanted files.
Thanks!
According to what limited research I have done, it seems like the rtl8192cd may not be a specific chip, but rather the name of a driver for a family of chips. I find lots of references to rtl8192cd as a driver, but like you I can't find anything about an rtl8192cd chip.
If the actual hardware chip is an rtl8192ce, that apparently supports 802.11n, up to 300mbps link.
Didn't you have a K2 that you opened up? Is there an actual Realtek chip on there that may provide some clues?
Is there any reason why the wi-fi is so abhorrently slow? I mean it's just terrible. I calculate it at 11 megabits per second. I assume it's an 802.11b chipset?
According to the Logs, the wifi SoC is a rtl8192cd. I cannot find the exact specs for this chip (only ce, ced, eu and many others), but I suppose that it can handle more than the current data rate.
For me it seems that the K2 wifi is only indended for configuration and streaming, but not for copying many videos. That´s why I stay on the V0.57, which allows USB Transfer.
But you are right. The K2 needs an up-to-date wifi with an appropiate data rate.
You are, of course, correct -- I hate giving out misinformation, so thanks for the correction. I actually blew it twice; I meant to say FAT32 has a 32GB volume size limitation, not file size, I knew the file size was 4GB. But I was wrong about the volume size limitation anyway, as you're correct, that's a Windows limitation, not a FAT32 limitation.
So, yeah, now it works. Now I just have to figure out how to waterproof it while having the USB cable permanently attached; I'll route the USB cable so I can just plug in the phone when necessary and do quick offloads.
Is there any reason why the wi-fi is so abhorrently slow? I mean it's just terrible. I calculate it at 11 megabits per second. I assume it's an 802.11b chipset? If so, that's really disappointing for a premium-priced dashcam unit, swapping to an 802.11a chipset would give us up to 54mbps, which would be as fast as the USB and would eliminate this whole situation.
Great to hear that you was successfull.
3) Turn off the bike power, and wait for the K2 to shut down. You must power the K2 from the phone, not the 12v bike system.
USB is a little bit strange on the K2. Normally it is enough that USB is connected BEFORE the K2 starts, regardless of how the K2 is powered. But sometimes this does not work. Powering the K2 by USB is the most reliable way to enable USB Mode.
The 256GB SD card is formatted EXFAT; that's the only way you can get >32GB capacity in it. FAT32 has a 32GB file size limitation.
Just to correct this. FAT32 supports volumes sizes up to 16 TB, depending on the sector size. The maximum file size is 4 GB. Nevertheless, Windows (since Windows 2000) will not offer FAT32, if the size of a disk/card is bigger than 32GB.
In V0.61, the K2 always formats the SD Card in FAT32, regardless of its size.
SUCCESS!
I have successfully gotten the Android phone to recognize the K2 as an external storage device, and to copy files off it (all with leaving both the front and rear cameras attached, and while using a 256GB card). The file transfer times are still slow, but vastly better than wi-fi; it took 320 seconds to copy a 436mb file via wi-fi but only 70 seconds to copy the same file via USB. So over 4x faster through USB, almost 5x faster.
Also, because the file transfer is so much faster, it makes playback of your files practical. You don't get the constant stopping/buffering/stuttering in playback when viewing the files over USB.
And, for those who want to copy files in bulk, Android makes it easy, whereas the wi-fi copying is limited to only about 3 files at a time.
Okay, for those interested, here are the steps I had to take to get Android control of the K2.
1) Revert to stock 0.57 firmware.
2) Re-format the 256gb memory card from within the app
3) Turn off the bike power, and wait for the K2 to shut down. You must power the K2 from the phone, not the 12v bike system.
Using those steps, and the appropriate USB-C to Micro USB OTG cable, the phone recognizes the K2 as an external storage drive and you can copy the files right off it, even when using a 256GB card, and without having to disconnect any of the cameras.
Note: I don't know if the stock .57 firmware is required or if Frostie's modified bitrate firmware would also work. I might test that later. I went with the stock because Frostie recommended it, although I'd rather have the higher quality of his modified firmware.
Hi subscribe,
1) I can make changes to many of the settings, but some just won't save. For example, I turned off the speed display, changed to 60Hz and turned off the G2 sensor, and set the file recording time to 5 minutes. But when I power off and power back on, only some of those settings are saved.
I tried to reproduce this behaviour in V0.57 (with and without mod), but was not successfull. All settings get saved. What happens if you change the non-sticky settings again? Maybe your K2 has problems in saving all the settings at once.
3) I saw that there are now three directories in the app, so some things have changed. But I didn't see any way to mark a specific file on the K2 to avoid being deleted. Is that possible?
Unfortunately there is currently no way to mark a file as write-protected. The only way to avoid videos gets overwritten is, disable loop recording. But the drawback is, that the K2 will stop recording when the card is full.
@Innovv
How about implementing an additional directory (e.g "saved") and the feature, that the user can move the video in that directory. This way it would out of the way of loop recording.
Well...this needs some explanation.
K2 and USB Transfer is some kind of a neverending story. And till now the problems have not been solved, what makes the story a sad story.
SD Card smaller or equal 32 GB => USB works
SD Card bigger than 32 GB => USB does only work if you remove the rear cam
With V0.51 and V0.57, this behaviour changed a little bit, as they implemented ExFat. In this versions, if you format you SD Card in ExFat, USB does work without the need to remove the rear cam.
So maybe the reason why your Android does not "see" your K2 is, that your card is not formatted in ExFat.
But the ExFat Implementation seems to be a little bit faulty, as some users reported that they cannot read their 256 GB Card card on their computer. My modified firmware version of the V0.51 and V0.57 does not work with 256 GB cards formatted in ExFat, too. It works well with 128 GB Cards in ExFat or if the 256 GB Card is formatted in FAT32.
In V0.61 Innovv remove the ExFat Format for some reasons (see https://www.innovv.com/forum/innovv-k2/new-v61-firmware-what-is-it-for). Means you (again) need to remove the rear cam for USB Transfer, if your card is bigger than 32 GB.
So what to do now?
As you want to use USB, you should use the V0.57 and format your Card in ExFat. But you will not be able to use my modified firmware as long as you use a 256 GB Card.
I never checked why the modified V0.57 has problems with 256 GB Card, as I don't own a card of that size. Would be interesting to see the error messages, but I don't want to buy a card only for this.
Thanks for the quick response!
1) Yes, the time on the recorded videos matches the time on the phone.
2) I understand it can be done with a computer, but I don't want to take a computer with me, so can it be done using an Android phone?
3) Is this a feature that can be added? It would be extremely helpful. I have a DV688 camera system on my other bike, and it has a very handy pushbutton that you can mount near the dash. Whenever you want to save a video, you just push the button and the recorder marks that video. It makes it extremely easy to keep and find the most important video segments. It is surprising (and disappointing) that the K2, which costs twice as much as the DV688, doesn't have a similar feature. Can you please add it?
Thank you!
1. Please check whether the time in the K2 video is synchronized with the time on your phone.
We would like to know more so that we can determine the specific reason.
2. You can use USB cable to connect to the computer, so you can directly copy and edit the video on the computer.
When using this feature, we recommend that you unplug the rear lens.
3. I'm sorry that the APP does not have this function at present.
Except for the video saved in the parking file, other videos will be overwritten when the SD is full.
